Caravan Towing

After fifty odd years of driving I have been persuaded to buy a caravan, and never having towed anything before, decided to book a lesson in towing. I arrived at the meeting place with my car complete with newly fitted tow hook, and the lesson started immediately in how to safely hitch a caravan to the car. Once this had been completed and the extended mirrors attached I drove off onto the main road. Lesson 1: remember that the van is attached when pulling out. I didn't and the near side wheel of the van bounced over the kerb as I joined the road, fortunately no damage done and that mistake has been etched into my mind! We proceeded down a number of different types of road, from single carriageway 30 and 40 mph, to dual carriageway de restricted and town centre with parked vehicles on both sides of the road, all without mishap. We eventually arrived at a private car park and I was put through the paces of driving forwards, and then reversing back in a straight line, and learning what to do when it didn't. I eventually got the hang of this, and we moved on to manoeuvring into a parking position. This took a little longer, getting the angle right, but I mastered that, having been given a few tips to make the job easier. Once I felt confident at all these things I drove back to the starting point, once again without incident, and proceeded to unhitch the van successfully and the enjoyable lesson was over. When I first booked the lesson I felt a bit apprehensive as to how I would fare, but it was not traumatic and by the time I drove home I felt very confident that I would be competent to drive fifteen hundred miles to the south of France in three weeks time, and am looking forward to it. I would recommend anyone who purchases a caravan for the first time to attend a towing course, and would certainly recommend Towing Solutions to anyone.

Thank you for giving me the confidence to tow.

Best wishes,
