What is the UK Towing Safety Alliance?

The UK Towing Safety Alliance is a coalition of leading organisations in road safety, towing, leisure, agriculture and transport. It is convened by the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS).

Its mission: to reduce towing-related incidents on UK roads by promoting clear, practical safety guidance, sharing resources, and fostering cross-sector collaboration.

A flagship campaign of the Alliance is TLC: Tyres, Load, Connectivity — a simple, memorable checklist that every person towing must run through before hitting the road:

Tyres — ensure correct pressure, tread depth, condition, and age
Load — check that loads are within legal limits, well distributed, and fully secured
Connectivity — confirm all lights, couplings, breakaway cables, and electrical systems are properly connected and functioning

In recent years, data has shown that incidents involving towed vehicles have risen — between 2022 and 2024, more than 16,700 incidents were recorded, with a 16% increase over that period.
